After graduating from Norman North High School, Lyman headed to Stillwater, where he earned his B.S. in Business Administration (Economics) from Oklahoma State University. After four years in Stillwater, he returned home to Norman to attend the University of Oklahoma College of Law.

After obtaining his law degree from OCU in 1981, Robert spent 17 years as a staff attorney for The Hartford and another 17 years as a staff attorney at State Farm Insurance Company. He has taken many cases to trial throughout the state of Oklahoma and serves as a member of the Oklahoma Board of Bar Examiners.
